The Copper Brick Road

Frugal Heat Source (Great for injuries)

So DS came home from school today only to have a total breakdown. His legs were hurting him and after inspecting them I could only come to the conclusion of growing pains. Poor guy. I remember my growing pains oh too well. With his crying you could tell it was pretty bad. After giving him Tylenol I was trying to figure out what else I could do for him. He didn’t want me to rub them, so I was trying to figure out what kind of heat I could provide. I don’t have a heating pad. I have a heated blanket but I didn’t think that would provide enough localized heat. Finally, it came to me. Rice. Dry rice holds heat. So, I went to the lonely sock pile, got one, filled it up just a little bit with rice (since DS is little), tied it off and threw it in the microwave for 1 minute. Perfect! It provided just enough heat to put on his little leg. You can use flax seed too, but I didn’t have any.

This worked great for us in a pinch. Keep it in mind the next time you have an injury that needs heat. It’s cheap and uses no power! I think I’m going to pull out the sewing machine and make a prettier one since I’m sure this won’t be our last encounter with growing pains. Flannel should work well.
